Life inside Ontruck
9th September 2021
Ontruck is currently reinventing Europe’s trucking industry. We are the leading digital platform and carrier network for B2B on-demand trucking, giving back control to shippers and carriers and developing technologies which make road freight experience smooth and efficient. How? By reducing the amount of empty kilometres travelled by goods vehicles, therefore optimizing their use and occupancy rate, reducing CO2 emissions and creating a WORLD WITHOUT WASTE.
Our company is backed by international investors, and we have been awarded by Bloomberg as a BloombergNEF Pioneer 2021, making Ontruck the first Spanish company to ever receive this recognition and the only company in European Union awarded this year.
At Ontruck we believe that creativity, performance, and innovative solutions thrive in a diverse and international atmosphere, where people from different cultures can exchange ideas and contribute to the company’s functioning. With offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam, our team includes many nationalities. English is our main working language, but you can easily hear Spanish, French or even Greek in our headquarters.
We're on our way to create a sustainable future of transportation thanks to the hard work and energy of our teams. Meet here some of our team members!
Meet Elena Sanz, Product Manager in the Product Team
Elena Sanz studied Advertising and Public Relations and worked for Leo Burnett and McCann, two of the most relevant advertising agencies in the world, but after some years she decided to step out of her comfort zone to challenge herself. Elena was passionate about the current innovation in the technology and software fields, so she became Product Manager. She joined Ontruck during 2020 as a Product Manager in order to build technology which improves our carriers experience and our products.
Elena had not worked in the transportation industry before, but she was aware of Ontruck’s reputation, as she attended many conferences given by the members of the team. “I am proud of working for a company with such an excellent track record and a strong industry leader”, she states. Besides that, what she values the most about working at Ontruck are several aspects:
- Disruptive product & value generators: Ontruck was able to identify a market need by creating a service that is revolutionizing regional transport. The technical solution brings value to both carriers and companies, and it also enables time, cost and CO2 emissions savings.
- Lean mindset and framework based on OKRs: The lean methodology allows each team to improve steadily, offering the service which meets the client’s needs. She also likes the team organization by squads and oriented to OKRs.
- Experimental by nature: teams continuously improve product and work processes on various levels, bringing value through each iteration.
- And, of course, people! Coworkers support each other, and they are always ready to help.
As a Product Manager, Elena has to deeply understand the needs of users in order to develop a compelling product vision and strategy. She is in charge of the whole product development process, so she partners with designers, engineers, and data scientists to build technology, and systems that redefine how to move freight in the most efficient and low-carbon way through our optimized network of carriers.
“Nowadays, working at Ontruck is a constant challenge, and this is the type of culture in a company that I like the most which makes you improve daily”
When describing the working environment at Ontruck, she enjoys being a part of a team where members encourage each other and share their ideas. Now she feels she is working in a company where she can continue to grow her skills both personally and professionally, chasing for the extra mile and helping each other at any time you can.
“I believe that Ontruck is providing me with solid knowledge and expertise to get on the fast track to continue growing as a product manager while challenging myself every day”
Thanks for sharing your experience, Elena!
Meet Jason Rosier, Account Executive at Ontruck Netherlands
In his own words he is "responsible for the first contact with potential new clients, as well as navigating the rest of the process in order to figure out if the solution Ontruck offers would be a good fit for their transportation needs. By getting to know not only our clients, but also our customer's clients, I am able to figure out if Ontruck can save them time and energy, increase efficiency or generally add value to their processes".
Jason joined Ontruck in Sep 2020 as an SDR. It was his first experience within the transportation industry. He was promoted quickly to Account Executive, which according to his manager, was "made possible due to great performance and an attitude of relentless self-improvement".
When we asked Jason about what he values most about Ontruck, it was autonomy and coaching: "The objectives are clear, and I get to try different approaches when it comes to accomplishing these. I couldn't do this without the right coaching. I think that having the right guidance accounts for a large part of the progress that I have made thus far. The input you deliver really gets noticed and considered within the organization. Everybody is open to feedback and people value each other's perspective on all levels".
Thanks for sharing your story Jason!
Meet Andry Rakotomanandray, Fleet Analyst at Ontruck France
In his own words, Andry's job is to "match supply (truck drivers) and demand (shipper orders). The objective is to reduce empty mileage for drivers and optimize revenues for Ontruck".
Andry joined Ontruck in December 2019 and is currently working on improving our carriers' experience with our optimized journeys. His manager believes that Andry embodies our values, is always looking for ways to optimise what we do and "makes sure we stay fair to our shippers and carrier partners".
In Andry's words: "What I like in my job it's that its both operational (tackling live issues, route optimization) and analytical (I use data a lot in my daily tasks and also to conduct various business analyses). Ontruck challenging a very traditional industry (with a lot of manual and old-fashioned processes) with its technology, and it's very cool!"
Thanks for sharing your story Andry!
Meet Blandine Lozano, Live Traffic Team Lead at Ontruck France
Blandine leads the French support team to “ensure the best quality service level for our carriers and shippers, proactively seeking solutions, developing and analysing reports to translate it into improvement.” She also makes sure that the operation is successfully flowing.
Blandine joined Ontruck in Nov 2019 as an Analyst and brought to the team her solid experience in key operational roles at other successful start-ups and “last mile delivery companies”.
Her manager describes her as a positive and dynamic person: “She spreads energy around her. She's always eager to learn and develop new skills.” Blandine is getting the opportunity to thrive and develop new skills after being promoted to her current position.
When asked what she values most about her role at Ontruck, Blandine said she loves to always go a step further in her performance. “I truly think that challenges bring out the best in us. We have the chance to have open-conversations with every department while we challenge ourselves to improve the way we work at Ontruck. It is so energizing”, she explained.
Thanks for sharing your story Blandine!
Meet Raúl Castañeda, Strategic Capacity Manager in the Spain Team
Raúl joined Ontruck in Feb 2017 after 2 years working in Sales at La Nevera Roja and 1.5 years in Australia, improving his English skills! Ontruck is his first experience in the transport industry and “not a day goes by without learning something new”, which is something he really loves about working here.
When asked why did he join Ontruck, he says: “I loved the idea of revolutionizing the industry, and doing something to make life easier for both Shippers and Carriers”. Here, he has been in different positions related to support for carriers, helping them with the onboarding and fleet communication. Now he is a Strategic Capacity Manager and bridges the gap between Ops and Prod & Tech, to make sure we have the most efficient workflow. He helps Ontruck’s team to avoid wasting resources or time on things that have no impact.
What he likes most about the working culture of Ontruck is “the mentality of always learning, always improving. There is no one single day that I go home with nothing new. Apart from that, I like the freedom we have to talk to other teams or departments asking for help and the YES attitude we have: One team, one dream!”.
During these two years, he has learnt a lot and some of the top things he will keep forever, in his own words, are: “always going to the root of the problem, figuring out why things happen, asking other people’s opinion even when I think that I can handle something myself (gathering different points of view is always useful), owning our mistakes and solving them because learning is a lifetime process”.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Raúl!
Meet Ana Carvajal, Product Analyst in the Data Team
Ana comes from far away: Nicaragua! Five years ago she moved to Spain and in July 2018 she became part of the Ontruck family.
After finishing her Master’s degree in Industrial Economics and working in the startup environment in the transport industry, she joined us because she always knew she wanted to join a startup where technology and data are used to disrupt the traditional transport and freight road industries. So Ontruck was the perfect fit for her!
She describes her job at Ontruck as being “in the most fun area: DATA!”. As a Product Data Analyst, she makes the data all the company teams need available for everyone through reports, ETLs, and data as a service. She also works closely with Product and Engineering in order to build metrics for measuring the success of the features we develop and release.
“Working in the Data & Analytics team is super fun, we are a small team with fantastic dynamics.”
When describing the working environment at Ontruck, she feels that she can trust her team and that her work is highly appreciated. Before moving to Spain, she lived and worked in the US for 5 years. There, she didn’t love her job, due partly to the micromanaging and super competitive environment in her department. At Ontruck she loves to have the opportunity of always learning new things, and her multidisciplinary job allows her to work across different areas and broaden her skills. She is always up for a challenge!
She thinks that Ontruck provides a unique working culture, and the CEO talking and interviewing employees individually makes everyone feel heard. That provides transparency on what is working well, but most importantly what is not working out and needs to be improved.
Thanks for sharing your story, Ana!
